On his third solo effort, Three 6 Mafia member DJ Paul passes on the horror-show style of hip-hop that bloodied his previous albums.
A Person of Interest ain't nuthin' but a Dirty South G thang with a little respect thrown toward electro and dubstep as "I'm Dat Raw" rumbles the trunk and chants down the competition like a boss, even when the synth melody is vibrant and bright with that Deadmau5 or Diplo shine.
"W.I.L.L." brings in party animal Gucci Mane and some dubsteppy beat-chopping for a trap-meets-club highlight, but if the always scowling and street Paul seems to be kowtowing to whatever 2013 needs, there's the great frustration of "I Can't Take It," which kisses off emo rap with Fred Sanford style ("Listen to your record?/Whoo! I got to go, look at the time!").
For his version of hurt, veteran Paul prefers the Three 6 blues as "Had to Eat" with Aaron Williams is a beat-down and brutal slice of reality ("No pot to piss in/No window to throw it out of"), while Pitbull's style of club hits gets mocked by the straight-to-the-point disco banger "No Panties." "My Best (My Pimpin)" offers "one for the ladies" as the rapper barks out sweet nothings ("You my best f*#kin' thang, but you can't be my main"), and while this great mess of ghetto fabulous is the classic Mafia style of throwing every idea on wax and seeing what sticks, this gutter variety show runs way long at 26 tracks.
Pimps and players won't mind and can slice it into four chunks for a hedonistic month's worth of new, reckless weekend music.
