Blow It Out Your Ass It's Veruca Salt is Veruca Salt's belated attempt for indie credibility.
Recorded with Steve Albini, the four-song EP is a noisy, shrieking slice of indie guitar rock, featuring two songs apiece from Nina Gordon and Louise Post.
Both of the songwriters contribute one pop song and one dirge-like grind; in both cases, the pop song is superior.
However, the pop songs (Gordon's "Shimmer Like a Girl" and Post's "I'm Taking Europe with Me") are masked in shards of noise and screams, which tend to obscure the melodies.
But that was the intent of the EP -- to prove that Veruca Salt isn't a simpering little pop band.
Unfortunately, they are at their best when they have strong, catchy hooks -- something "New York Mining Disaster 1996" and "Disinherit" completely lack -- and when they try to be nothing but a noise-rock band, they just aren't as powerful.
