The Scott Thomas Band's California is a promising debut that captures the quartet's laidback trad-rock quite well.

The album is an update of the classic Californian sound of the '70s -- it's edgier than the Eagles and Jackson Browne, but it's still fairly mellow and has the same spacious atmosphere.

Although the songwriting can be a little uneven, the group has a tight sound and a knack for easy hooks that makes California an enjoyable journey.
