As a near omnipresent pioneer of new age music, there are few ambient musical textures that David Arkenstone has not explored.
On Caravan of Light, he takes a geographic journey of sound along old spice routes through Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
While much of the music is delicate and hypnotic and evokes a feeling of exotica and spirituality, Arkenstone sometimes breaks the spell with the introduction of vocals; one example is "Road to Zanzibar," which features Valerie Fahren where the subtle rhythms of the song are broken by the vocal line.
Arkenstone fans will surely still love this album, but those not familiar with his vast catalog of works might do better to choose one of his classic instrumental compositions.
