This is the first good Ringo Starr album since 1973's Ringo! What's that? Err, oh -- sorry! It's nothing to do with the Beatles, although between the moniker and song "Beatnik Angel George," you'd expect the Fab Faux, Rain, or Bootleg Beatles.
Following up 2008's debut All Y'All, the Atlanta foursome cherrypick classic power pop, garage rock, and rave-ups (the title track apes the Yardbirds' 1965 number six hit "For Your Love," only jumping on an Ian Dury's Blockheads' Mickey Gallagher-like piano train) with a post-punk aftertaste; standouts "Got It," "Make You Mine," and the aforementioned "Beatnik" feel like Supergrass singing Weezer tunes played by That Petrol Emotion.
With these "ooohs and ahhs" vocals, harmonies, and a defining sense of elation, we should count our lucky stars it's not the cranky ex-Beatle.
