Though it falls short of the excellence of Old Boyfriends or The Waiting Game, Devil May Care is a very respectable effort from a young artist who found her voice early on.
True to form, Martin doesn't inundate listeners with obvious choices.
Buddy Guy's "Save Your Love for Me" is the only song on this British release that really qualifies as a standard.
Otherwise, Martin turns her attention to lesser known classics ranging from Noel Coward's "If Love Were All" to the free-spirited title song -- a '50s classic by the undeservedly obscure vocalese master Bob Dorough.
Martin does her share of writing or co-writing this time, the most noteworthy examples being the pointed "Devil's Gonna Get You" and the dusky "On Thin Ice." While Boyfriends or Waiting would be better starting points for novices, Devil May Care is well worth hearing.
