More slick and less murk is the way Bassnectar delivers his brand of dubstep, shoving genres like hip-hop and breakbeat into a bass-heavy mix.
“Stadium dubstep” is the arguable tag for this brand of thump, and on Divergent Spectrum, it reaches a new level of epic, sounding as big as Skrillex blasted by gamma rays with all the trunk rumbling and speaker ripping that would come with.
Three of these cuts are remixes done for other artists, including Gogol Bordello, who actually seem to have their “Immigraniada” playfully interrupted by Bassnectar’s dropped-in, zombiestep beats.
His take on Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” is much more traditional, borrowing plenty of ideas from the world of trance, while the producer’s original cuts combine Miami bass attitude, show-off studio tricks, and the sound of Kraftwerk being flattened by a steamroller.
Good times, but you best warn the neighbors first.
