German combo Bohren & Der Club of Gore have built their sound of slow, creeping late-night dread, using doom as an exotic musical spice to goose up their jazzy compositions.
DOLORES is not, on the surface, a real departure, as the majority of the songs still retain that fevered Angelo Badalamenti feel.
But there are also moments here that imply a new musical dawn.
For example, the gentle tones of “von Schnäbeln” suggest light poking through the blinds, and the album's closer, “Welten,” calmly hangs on the precipice of a moment, all heralding a new beginning.
