Although he generally gets labeled as a country singer, the Scottish-born, Canadian-raised Johnny Reid is really much closer to the heartland rock template of Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, or Bruce Springsteen, writing songs that have a sweeping blue-collar everyman feel, depending on sincerity, well-considered lyrics, and a general positive tone to touch home.
His latest album, Fire It Up, is easily Reid's most radio-friendly to date, and several songs here, like the anthemic opener and title tune "Fire It Up," the fervent and earnest love song "Dedicated to You," and the wonderful "Baby I Know It," would fit right into the rotation on any adult contemporary station.
Not everything here clicks, but the songs that do hit just the right mix of personal and universal that is really Reid's great strength as a songwriter and singer.
