Longtime Japanese musician Harry "Haruomi" Hosono's 2007 release was the latest in a long string of experimentation with different bands and different musical styles.
With Flying Saucer 1947, Hosono and his backing band rove through cowboy ballads, through bluegrass and rockabilly-inspired pieces, and through ambient electronica, sometimes all at the same time.
Hosono's tradition is to cross genres with ease.
On Flying Saucer, he does so with such alarming comfort he's able to make Japanese retro-innovation seem familiar to a Western audience.
