David Houston often sang in a lower register on his hits, so fans who are not intimately familiar with his catalog may not realize what a gorgeous tenor voice he has.
On Golden Hymns, his first gospel album, the purity of his voice in its simple setting is very effective and even stirring.
This album is much more conventional and traditional than David, Houston's modernized sacred album from 1969, and is ultimately less exciting for that reason.
But if you prefer old-fashioned gospel music to revisionism laced with secular influences, Golden Hymns is the one to pick.
