Sun 60's third Epic release is also their best.
Headjoy finds David Russo and Joan Jones assembling a stable band lineup with Bret Jensen on guitar, Eddie Russo playing bass and Mike Lawrence drumming.
The stability lends a cohesiveness that is noticeable from the first song and the focus remains throughout this outing.
The brassy "C'mon + Kiss Me" was a near hit on alternative radio and there's no shortage of other hit-worthy tracks on this consistently melodic album.
"Lay Down" is a prayerful, spiritual lyric built around a hypnotic, churning guitar line.
The band injects a bluesy twang to "Hanging Out," which captures the lazy vibe of the song's lyric about going nowhere and not really caring.
Jones gives two of her most sensual vocal performances on the funky, slinky, seductive "Baby2" and "Sweething," which is moody and almost spoken-word.
The only slight missteps are "Desert Songs" with its strange, inscrutable lyrically imagery and the overly long experimentation of "Grass Is Greener.".
