Following the breakout success of her 2016 single "OOOUUU," which spawned countless remixes (both official and unofficial) and reached the Top 20 of the Billboard singles chart, openly lesbian rapper Young M.A released the seven-song Herstory EP in 2017.
She was born in Brooklyn and raised in several cities throughout the South before moving back to her home borough at the age of 16, and her tough, uncompromising music is equally informed by trap as well as New York hardcore rap.
The EP contains "OOOUUU" as well as second single "Hot Sauce," in addition to "JOOTD," built around a sample of Monica's breakout hit "Don't Take It Personal." The EP was released by the artist's own M.A Music; despite her success, she has resisted offers from major labels and decided to remain independent.
The EP charted in the Billboard 200 soon after its release.
