Intended as the kick-off to the new era of Pizzicato Five, now a trio headed by Nomiya Maki, Hi Guys, Let Me Teach You! is actually a subdued entry into their catalog.
A soundtrack to a Japanese TV drama, the tracks here are instrumentals, occasionally highlighted by Nomiya Maki's wordless singing.
Writer-musicians Yasuharu Konishi and Keitaro Takanami are in Henry Mancini territory here, whipping up a light froth on numbers such as "Duck Walk, Duck Soup," "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows," and "Poolside Lesson," probably closest to the instrumental work on On Her Majesty's Request than anything they had done up to that time.
This version of the band comes across as a '60s beat combo, with some tasty surf guitar and Hammond organ in the mix.
Also, fans will be interested to hear the beginnings of such Pizzicato Five classics such as "Let's Be Adult" here in nascent form as "Adult Oriented Cha Cha," and a cover of a Perry and Kingsley song, "Spacemen on the Schoolyard.".
