With a new (or, at the very least, shorter) name, Code Orange return with their sophomore effort, I Am King, an album that finds the band pushing its metalcore sound to punishing new extremes.
Once again working under the watchful eye of Converge guitarist and engineer Kurt Ballou, the band unleashes a 30-minute assault of gritty, frenzied metalcore that pays homage to the early days of the genre rather than the watered-down, mall-centric metal that has grown up in its place.
The combination of Code Orange's vigor and intensity and Ballou's abrasive production makes I Am King an album that will easily convince fans of bands like Converge and Coalesce that this band is the real thing.
