Lacuna Coil aren't always the doomiest of progressive goth metal bands; in fact, they sometimes sound like a heavier version of Heart, thanks to vocalist Cristina Scabbia's throaty wail.
But that actually makes them more accessible, in the best sense of the word.
In a Reverie, their first true full-length album, bears some similarity to contemporaries like the Gathering and Moonspell, but Lacuna Coil have their own distinct sound, which draws its dramatic power from both goth and classic metal.
A fine debut from a band that bears watching.
