Well known for hits like "I Just Wanna Stop," Gino Vannelli was a favorite on adult contemporary radio in the late 1970s and early '80s.
But by the time Inconsolable Man came out on L.A.'s tiny Romantique label in 1990, the popster had seen his visibility decrease considerably and was struggling commercially.
This CD, which contains mostly adult contemporary pop, with some blue-eyed soul-pop thrown in, is definitely the work of a singer past his prime.
Vannelli's singing lacks the confidence that characterized some of his early work, and most of the material is weak and uninspired.
Inconsolable Man does have a few decent tunes -- most notably, the pop-soul number "Shame" and the urban contemporary-flavored "Rhythm of Romance." But on the whole, this is a dull, pedestrian release that only Vannelli's most diehard fans should bother with.
