Ash Koley’s debut is a bright, breezy pop record, its focus split between the affable alto vocals of titular member Ash Koley and the slick, Top 40-styled arrangements provided by her bandmate, Phil Deschambault.
Like Lenka, whose own debut boasted a similar sound in 2008, the duo explores a wealth of pop influences, keeping one eye on the commercial standards of 2010 while evoking memories of the Cardigans, Boys Meets Girl, and Lilith Fair’s early lineup.
The songs are pleasant throughout, but Inventions rarely moves beyond the smooth, department store pop that serves as the album’s bedrock, resulting in a record that’s occasionally too vanilla for its own good.
