Best known as an anime voice actor, Daisuke Ono has built a fan following for his singing on the side.
While the compositions are relatively straightforward J-pop fare, Ono manages to invest something of himself in the delivery of Kinmokusei.
The title track comes off quickly, with a relatively formulaic melody for contemporary theme music.
However, follow-up "Tori no Yume" provides a much deeper approach.
The songwriting borrows clearly from the melodrama of Japanese lounge music, but enhances that with more elements of modern Japanese rock and singer/songwriter emotive abilities.
There is a slightly darker tinge to the piece that, while straining Ono's lower registers a bit, provides a nice palette for him to show off a less nasal voicing.
The album finishes off with instrumental variants on the two primary songs, for an added touch that fans might enjoy.
