New age keyboardist Yanni meets traditional Mexican music more than halfway on his album Mexicanisimo.
The tunes are familiar Mexican folk melodies, and the arrangements include mariachi horns and guitarrons, as male harmony singers (who can be imagined wearing big sombreros) declaim the lyrics in Spanish.
Somewhere in there is Yanni, playing in his usual sparkling manner, his keyboard lines fitting into the traditional sound.
The only objection his fans may have is that he takes such a backseat in the music.
This is a good collection of Mexican themes, but it leans more toward easy listening than new age.
