Mogwai's No Education Equals No Future (Fuck the Curfew) EP is an outgrowth and evolution of the band's sound as found on Young Team.

It seems that this EP is perhaps the Young Team that should have been.

Relying on their characteristic blend of chaos and melody, this album spawns the epic "Xmas Steps," a 12-minute expanse that ranges from hushed guitar to vibrant aggression.

The inclusion of a cello on this track, courtesy of Luke Sutherland, enhances an already full sound.

The other tracks on the album: "Rollerball" and "Small Children in the Background" are less impressive, but interesting nonetheless.

Both are essentially ambient-noise, placing gentle sounds over harsh background noise.

Despite the rather short period of time between the release of this EP and the release of Young Team, it appears that the band has grown.

The mixing on No Education is superior to that of Young Team, and due to this, Mogwai sound more crisp and inspired.

Mogwai seem to understand how their unique music can be best displayed, and the refinements apparent on No Education reflect this.

Although not as groundbreaking as the earlier Ten Rapid, there is great merit in this album, and it hopefully reflects the path that Mogwai will be taking in the future.
