Garbage's day in the sun was appropriately "Only Happy When It Rains," a minor epiphany concerning obsession with depression and painting it bleak.
The lyrics perfectly captured the blissful ennui of the faceless alterna-rock crowd.
Of course, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" remains the generational anthem of the '90s, perched with "All You Need Is Love," "All the Young Dudes," "We Are the Champions" (the groovy '70s provided two), and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" (the '80s were lean times) atop the Mount Olympus of rock.
But this anti-rallying cry comes dangerously close to defining the times and the commercialism of angst.
Although "Only Happy When It Rains" also veers dangerously close to a Jesus and Mary Chain number of a similar name, this single is pure Garbage.
Two bonuses waited on the flip, "Girl Don't Come" and "Sleep." Both cuts were less than two minutes long, and cut into alternate grooves on the holographic 7" so it played them randomly no matter where the needle landed.
The Australian CD version substituted "Driving Lesson" and "Dog New Tricks (The Pal Mix).".
