These small-group sessions, presumably all from 1956, are culled in small part from the Blue Note collection Early Art, with more from the Tampa/V.S.O.P./Galaxy release Art Pepper Quartet.
It's a substantial, though far from comprehensive, collection of the bebop alto saxophonist's work in his heyday, before heroin addiction took him off the scene.
West Coast all-stars accompany Pepper, and with their substantial support, you hear the fluidity and depth that made him an icon.
It's not a bad starter set, featuring quite a few of his originals and jam tunes.
