Michael Hall's first solo album following the breakup of the Wild Seeds finds the singer/songwriter turning inward and producing an effort that's musically low-key, and lyrically darker and more introspective than his work with his former band.
It might take a few plays for some to warm up to Quarter to Three, which doesn't contain anything as immediately accessible as his humorous and spirited offerings with the Wild Seeds, but that's not to diminish his songwriting talent, or the quality of the performances here.
Quarter to Three has many brilliant moments, such as the folky "Time Out Of Mind," and a poignant and poetic love song "I Want To Watch You Age," featuring a beautiful harmony vocal by Rosie Flores.
Thought-provoking and well-written, this is a strong debut worth delving into.
