Since the acclaimed jazz singer was still quite young at the time of this release and had only four albums to her name, it may seem a bit premature to release an album tiled THE VERY BEST OF JANE MONHEIT.
Yet Monheit's vocal gifts are such that a best-of compilation seems far from precocious, especially since Monheit has more nuance, precision, and timbral control than most jazz singers twice her age.
This sampler cherry-picks from her first efforts, and session help from old-school luminaries like Kenny Barron (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone) give the set a sparkling, timeless quality.
