A stopgap release between Nowhere and Going Blank Again, the Today Forever EP actually can make a solid claim to being Ride's best all-around effort.
If not quite as immediately poppy as many of its early songs were, Today Forever still shows the band eager to make its own mark while avoiding the somewhat pointless retro focus of its later years.
"Unfamiliar" makes for an enveloping start, embracing a great combination of feedback crunch, Cure-influenced psychedelia, and delicious harmonies.
"Sennen" rides a lovely chime and steady shuffle beat from Colbert, while "Beneath" merrily gallops along with some good guitar pyrotechnics and singing from Bell and Gardener.
The real winner comes at the end with "Today" -- if the lyrical sentiments are simple enough, the slow rise and blast of the music from start to finish, with some heartbreaking background drones to boot, is one huge, romantic wash of sound.
Some of shoegazing at its finest, no question.
