In between recording projects Bram Vermeulen sometimes embarked on a sort of "best of Bram Vermeulen" theater tour, sometimes with a band, sometimes solo, and sometimes somewhere in between (with 1983's theater tour Het Leven he only had a drummer playing behind him).
On the evenings of September 11, 12, 13, and 14 of September, 2001, however, Vermeulen performed in the Ancienne Belgique in Bruxelles with a full backing band and a horn section.
Well-known songs like "Rode Wijn," "De Steen" and "De Wedstrijd" are given new or additional arrangements.
And Vermeulen shows himself to be a master of his own material.
After years of touring, his phrasing has been perfected, often beating the original versions (case in point being "Rode Wijn" and "Bont & Blauw").
The booklet has some nice song by song comments by Vermeulen himself.
Because this is a "best of" collection (all the classics are here), it serves as a perfect introduction for newcomers, and thanks to the arrangements and fine singing of Vermeulen, the die-hard fan won't be disappointed either.
A nice collection of Vermeulen's literate and thoughtful songs.
