Voxxx is a trip back in time for Denki Groove to a full early-'80s techno-pop revival, drum machines and all.
Their first album as a duo (Sunahara had left to pursue lounge-ish solo albums), DG create a thick stew of dance beats and vocals, and since the album is called Voxxx, explore the human voice with much electronic manipulation.
On the single "Nothing's Gonna Change," vocoder voices chant and loop over a Moroder-esque beat; on "The Homerun Tiger in a Bush," call-and-response from a live rally is cut up and scratched mercilessly.
On the other hand, the album is much too long, with obvious filler.
A fine track like "TKO Tekno Queen" can get lost bookended by such noodling.
And the reliance of spoken word samples in Japanese means that most non-speakers will just wish for the instrumentals and songs.
